Which D2R Warlock Build Should You Play in Season 14?
Season 14 of Diablo 2 Resurrected introduced the Warlock class with four major build paths, and they all play differently. If you’re jumping into Reign of the Warlock and wondering where to put your first skill points and how to gear up, here’s what you need to know.
Fire Warlock is your leveling build. Through normal and nightmare, the ring of fire and flame wave tears through everything. Gear requirement is almost zero—Magefist gloves, random rares, and a vendor teleport staff. Clear speed in Stony Tomb and Cow Level is respectable even with junk gear. The catch is fire immunes in hell. You’ll need a party or a respec.
Abyss Warlock solves that. Myasma chains and abyss deal magic damage, which faces almost no immunities in the game. Chaos sanctuary, worldstone keep, anywhere—nothing is off limits. Playstyle: drop chains at your feet, blade warp across the pack, let the chains rip while abyss drops on top. A defiler summons minus enemy magic resistance; a bound odar tanks for you.
Tainted Warlock is the farming powerhouse once you have levels. Blood boil does fire and physical damage, so immunes aren’t a wall. Rotation: send your tainted, drop death sigil, blood boil until things explode, engorge to sustain. Scaling is aggressive—every plus skill multiplies clear speed. This build benefits most from decent Diablo 2 Resurrected items. A few cheap D2R items with plus skills and resistances make hell farming smooth.
Echoing Strike dominated season 13 before the nerf, and everyone wanted to know if it was still viable. Two versions exist now. Physical stacks echoing strike synergies with blade warp and mirrored blades, using an insight weapon for physical damage—and since echoing strike doesn’t consume durability on ethereal weapons, that’s a nice bonus. Hex purge shifts to magic damage from the explosions, running a spirit crystal sword for plus skills. Physical struggles more with budget gear since melee in D2R is inherently gear-dependent. Hex purge is more forgiving and the safer choice until you have high-end weapons to swap into.
For cheap D2R items to start any build, focus on four things: a spirit sword, a lore helm, stealth armor, and resistance rings. These cost almost nothing and make every Warlock build functional through hell. The class scales on skill synergies and demon management, not expensive uniques or runewords. Pick your build—fire for leveling, abyss for safety, tainted for farming, echoing strike if you want to min-max later. The class is forgiving enough that you won’t feel stuck with budget gear.
